SHOW ME (OUSIDE OF CAR)

1. Show  me how you would check all the indicators are working on the vehicle?

You would open the vehicle and apply the hazard warning lights which is usually a button with a  red triangle on it and then walk round the car to check all bulbs are functioning.

2. Show me how you would check the brake lights are working on the vehicle? (The examiner will offer to help you.)

Ask the examiner to stand at the rear of the vehicle, open up the car, turn the ignition on and apply the brake pedal.

3.  Open the bonnet and show me where you would fill up your screenwash?

Open bonnet, identify reservoir and explain you would keep it topped up regularly with water and screenwash.

 4. Open the bonnet, identify the oil dipstick and explain how you would check the vehicle’s oil level?

Identify oil dipstick and explain that to check the level you would remove dipstick, wipe dipstick clean, replace dipstick and then remove and read it to check that level falls between maximum and minimum.

 5. Open bonnet and identify engine coolant and explain how you would check the level is correct?

Identify engine coolant and explain that the level should fall between maximum and minimum. (The coolant is coloured.)

6.  Open bonnet and show me the brake fluid and explain how you know it is at the correct level?

Identify brake fluid and check that the level falls between maximum and minimum markers.

SHOW ME (INSIDE OF CAR)

1.Show me how you would check that your power steering is working before starting a journey?

You start the vehicle up, give the steering wheel a wiggle and it should feel light at this point. If it feels heavy then this could indicate a problem with the power steering.

2.Show me how you would check that your handbrake is in working order?

When applying the handbrake it should take tension/have resistance and once applied should secure the vehicle.

3.Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washers and wipers?

You would turn on the ignition of the vehicle and activate the windscreen washers (in my current car pull the wiper lever towards you.)

4.  Show me if the car is steamed up front and rear how you would de-mist it?

You would turn on heated rear (and front window if vehicle has one) and apply fans to the windscreen at a hot temperature.

5. Show me how you could check that the fog lights are working? Tell me when you would use them?

Turn ignition on, turn the lights on and then switch on fog lights. Fog lights would be used if visibility is less than 100 metres.

6.Show me how you would switch your headlights from dipped to main beam? How would you know your main beam is on?

Turn on ignition, turn on your dipped beam headlights, turn on full beam (in my car pulling the left lever towards you). A blue light would show on the dashboard when full beam is on. You would use main beam when you are on a unlit road when no-one is coming towards you.

7.Show me how you would check that the horn in your vehicle is working?

Sound horn (some cars may need ignition on to activate it).

TELL ME 

1. Tell me how you would check your headlights and tail-lights were working.

Explain that you would put the ignition on and then switch the lights on, then walk round the vehicle to check that each bulb was functioning.

2. Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system?

Warning light saying ‘ABS’ would flash on your dashboard.

3. Tell me where you would find information about your tyre pressures and how you could check what pressure your tyres are currently at?

You would find information in the vehicle handbook. You would check what pressure your tyres are at using a pressure gauge.

4. Tell me how you would check that your head restraint was adjusted correctly?

Adjust the head restraint so that the centre lines up with the centre of your head

5. Tell me how you would check that your tyres are safe to use on the road?

You would inspect the tyres to check there were no cuts or bulges and had a tread depth of at least 1.6mm across the central ¾ around the full circumference of the tyre. To check your current tread depth you would use a special depth gauge tool available to buy from garages.
